On a brick-veneer house the walls need nothing. Everything that can fail with paint on it is the trim — fascia, barge boards, eaves linings, window reveals, the garage door and whatever timber holds up the front porch. That is a much smaller job than "paint the outside of my house", and it is worth knowing before you collect quotes, because a painter pricing the whole envelope on a face-brick home is pricing work that does not exist.

Inside is where the age shows. Forty-odd years of repainting leaves doors and architraves thick with enamel, and ceilings that have been rolled over rather than sealed, so old water marks around a light fitting or a bathroom vent keep coming back through each new white. Those need a stain-blocking primer, not another coat of ceiling flat, and they are the sort of thing that gets skipped because it looks fine for the first three weeks.

The other Jamisontown particular is the aspect. A lot of these streets run east–west, which puts a long unshaded northern wall on one side of the house and a permanently shaded southern one on the other. The north side chalks and the south side grows mould, and the same tin of paint will not solve both — the north needs UV-stable pigment, the south needs treating and washing before anything goes on it.
