A suburb built in one go, now repainting in one go

St Clair went up largely through the late seventies and eighties as a planned estate, and it shows in the work. Street after street of single-storey brick veneer with tiled roofs, timber fascia and barge boards, and eaves that were all painted at roughly the same time. Forty years on, they are all reaching the end of that paint at roughly the same time too.

The recurring job here is exterior trim. The brickwork is usually sound and often left unpainted, but the timber fascia, barges, eaves and gable ends have weathered, and that is where the peeling starts. Done properly it means scraping back to sound timber, spot priming the bare patches and rebuilding the coat — not rolling fresh paint over flaking boards, which buys you two summers at most.

Inside, the original layouts have low-set ceilings and a lot of trim per square metre: skirtings, architraves, internal doors, sometimes timber-framed windows. Trim is slow, fiddly work and it is where a cheap quote quietly cuts corners. We price it honestly and cut it in by hand.
