The housing here is genuinely old by Western Sydney standards — a lot of it went up in the fifties and sixties, and much has been extended once or twice since. That means solid brick or fibro walls, hardwood window frames that have been painted more times than anyone can count, and interiors where the doors, skirtings and architraves carry so much enamel that the mouldings have gone soft. On those, preparation is not part of the job, it is most of it: washing down decades of grime, cutting back build-up, sanding hardwood back to a key and filling before anything else happens.

North of the line the work is entirely different. Warehouse and factory units, small workshops, tenancy fit-outs between leases. Large uninterrupted wall areas that spray out quickly, but with constraints a house never has — you are working around stock, forklifts and a business that has to keep trading, so the schedule matters as much as the finish.
