Paint has a minimum application temperature and a minimum drying window, and in Springwood through winter both are real constraints rather than fine print. A wall in shade at twelve degrees with dew forming by late afternoon will not cure properly, and a coat applied anyway stays soft, marks easily and fails early. So exterior work here gets scheduled around the weather and the aspect, and a job that would take three days on the plain may take four up the mountain. We would rather say that at the quote than run over and blame the forecast.

The building stock is timber-heavy — weatherboard, timber-framed windows, decks, balustrades, verandah posts — sitting under a canopy that keeps everything damp. Mould and lichen on the shaded side of a house are routine, and they have to be treated and washed off, not painted over. Decks are the item most often underestimated: a grey deck has broken-down surface fibres that no coating will bond to, so it needs sanding back to sound timber first, and that is most of the cost.

The other local factor is fire. Many properties back onto bush, and there is little point putting a good exterior on a house whose gutters are full of leaf litter and whose subfloor is open. We are painters rather than bushfire consultants, but we will point out what we see while we are up the ladder, because it is a great deal cheaper to hear it from us than to find out another way.

Why the schedule matters more up here

On a shaded mountain elevation in July, a coat applied at three in the afternoon may still be soft when the moisture arrives, and a film that has been wet before it cured never reaches the hardness it was meant to.

Choosing colours before we start

We settle the scheme before the first coat, not during it. Bring your own colours or use ours, and we will sample them on your actual walls so you see them in your own light rather than under a shop fluoro — which is where most colour regrets begin.

Under a canopy and in mountain light, colours read considerably darker and cooler than they do on a chart. That is worth testing on the actual wall before committing.
